Location
Belmont-Carlton is the area between 6th St SE, Moore’s Creek, and the CSX (former C&O) railroad, in the south-east corner of Charlottesville, Virginia. It includes Avon Street, Monticello Avenue and Road, Carlton Avenue and Road, Rives Street, and the areas known as Hogwaller, Big Hill, and Coal Bin.
This is a neighborhood of hills and views. The Belmont Mansion at Belmont Avenue, Clark School Lawn, Monticello Avenue bend at Carlton Road, Belmont Park and the Monticello Avenue/Druid gateway all provide pleasant views overlooking the surrounding county and downtown Charlottesville with the mountains as a back drop. Two of these high points, Belmont Mansion and the
Monticello Avenue/Carlton Road open area, sit at an elevation of approximately 500 feet, representing the neighborhood’s highest points.
